The 5 Most Common Mistakes Made in Social Media Marketing Campaigns:
1. Not doing social media marketing:
We come across many companies that are not doing social media at all. There are many reasons why they don’t use social media to market their business and I will specifically address a common one, one that I call, "brand vulnerability".
What I mean by being "brand vulnerable" is these companies are afraid to put their brand online for fear of creating a channel where people can negatively interact with others about their company. This is a valid concern and what I have communicated with these companies is that people that wish to speak negatively about their company are going to find a way to do it regardless of creating a presence on any social media site. The power behind actually running these social media accounts is, you are able to control what comes in and how it is distributed. By doing it, if someone were to speak negatively, you would have a means to respond or remove those elements from your sites. By staying off of it you are subject to the persons actions.
2. Not being intentional:
Working with our clients, meeting prospects and talking with people at
events has educated us to realize people are not intentional about
their social media marketing efforts. In many cases, these people are
posting different information, selling themselves or just yelling into
random communities. In order to succeed in social media you must be
intentional about what you post. It is better to post less with a
target then to post frivolously. Don’t lose focus of your goals;
remember where you are going so you can plan on how to get there.
3. Over-Committing:
Many individuals and companies we meet try to do too much on social
media. They setup too many accounts, follow to many people, and send
too much information. Take a look at your schedule and, unless you can
hire a company, take your time with social media. Only take on what you
can give 100% effort. Otherwise you will end up wasting your time and
hurting your brand.
4. Selling yourself:
When we monitor the different social media sites, there is not a bigger
mistake then selling your products or services aggressively and
directly on social media. People are not on their Facebook to be sold
your product, they are there to see people, learn things and listen to
stories. If you can’t provide any of those elements in your social
media without blatantly selling yourself, you need to take a step back
and find help planning out your social media marketing strategy.
5. No automation:
Social media is growing quickly in size and complexity. Due to the
influx of the systems and noise, people don’t know about or understand
the power of social media automation. What I mean by social media
automation is, setting up your website or blog to automatically
syndicate content to your social media websites. For example, every
time Noodlehead Studios adds a new blog to the website it automatically
goes to several different social media sites including Linkedin,
Twitter, and Facebook. We no longer have to go to each site and post
our link, it is done automatically.
